The easter holidays are just around the corner – starting with Good Friday on April 17 until easter Monday on April 20. On those days and the days leading up to them, there are several events and occasions to celebrate easter with your family and friends. Or to remember one of the most important events in Irish history: the Easter Rising. In this post, we’ll let you know about the best easter activities in Dublin for you and your family.
Malahide Castle: Easter Fun at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
Children and adults of all ages can follow the Mad Hatter’s invite to Malahide Castle and fall down the rabbit hole! The event takes place on April 18th and 19th, starting at different times during the day. One date has been added due to popular demand! For 25 or 30€ respectively you can expect a picnic, sing-alongs with Alice and the Mad Hatter as well as an exciting scavenger hunt in the fairy gardens.
Fairyhouse Easter Festival
Not directly in Dublin, but about 40 minutes by car away, the Fairyhouse racecourse invites you to a fun filled festival for the whole family. From Saturday April 19 to Easter Monday, there will be some of the best horse races of the year. And on Easter Sunday you can witness the WillowWarm Gold Cup and expect a whole lot of family entertainment: The Easter bunny is visiting the racecourse as well as a magician.
Young visitors can watch a puppet show or live science performances. They can get their picture drawn by a cartoonist, or take part in the Easter Bonnet competition. (They have to bring their bonnet.) And they can visit the animals at the petting farm and play games at the Fairyhouse Kids Club. Children and adults alike will also love the live gig of the band The Sandmen in the afternoon. The best till last: Children up to 14 years get their tickets for free.
Easter Crafting for kids at the Dublin libraries
Whether you’re near Blanchardstown, Swords, Malahide, Rush, Garristown, Balbriggan, or Donabate – the Fingal libraries have got you covered! Children from 8-12 can join Easter Craft workshops in the afternoon on several occasions. Just check out their timetable and book ahead!
One whole week of fun at Swan Leisure Easter Camp
4-12 year olds can enjoy their Easter holiday and meet new friends at Swan Leisure Easter Camp. You can choose one week of the holidays. For four days children are entertained with lots of activities: From ball sports like football, basketball and volleyball, to obstacle courses crafting and art sessions to a daily swimming lesson. Parents can drop off their kids in the morning and pick them up at 3.30 pm. Snacks are provided, but a lunch and, of course, swimming clothes should be packed everyday.
Commemoration Ceremony and parade on Easter Sunday
Every year, the people of Dublin remember the Easter Rising from 1916. On Easter Sunday morning, the Irish Defence forces, usually joined by the President of Ireland, the Minister for Defence, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, the Taoiseach and other representatives position themselves in front of the GPO. Here, the Easter Rising took place in 1916. People interested in attending, can join the ceremony in the public viewing area outside the GPO starting at 11.15 am. Here are also large video screens set up, so that every visitor can see the event.
Easter workshops for adults
While most of these events are for families, there are also fun Easter-themed workshops and events for adults. Get creative at art workshops, for example at Clondalkin library. Learn how to do a floral centrepiece at Blanchardstown Library or an Easter Wreath in Ballinteer. Or build your own Easter bathbomb at lush. Don’t worry; there are Easter activities in Dublin for everyone!
