Enjoy a sunny day in Dublin in Phoenix Park

by | Jun 21, 2023 | A perfect day

Here’s why you should come to Phoenix Park on a sunny day

You lucked out on Irish weather, and you want to explore the capital on a sunny day? Then come to Phoenix Park! Stop number 12 on our City Sightseeing Tour offers a lot of activities – from sports and chilling with friends to visiting the deer, freely roaming in the park, or the animals at Dublin Zoo.

Rent a bike!

Start your day right and rent a bike to get around Phoenix Park! There’s no better way to explore the huge area and to get an overview of the largest city center park in Europe than with sun on your skin and a light wind in your hair! There are several routes you can take through the park and the people at Phoenix Park Bikes will gladly help you to find the right one for your needs. Visit the monuments in the park, stop for a coffee at one of the cafés and keep an eye out for the deer – on a sunny day you can usually see them from afar, roaming on the grass plains.

Look for the deer

Living here since the 17th century, when they were introduced for hunting, the fallow deer in Phoenix Park live a much more peaceful life today. About 600 of them freely roam in the 1,750 acre park, which sometimes makes the deer hard to find. Especially in the mornings you might be able to see them close to the center of the park, because there are only few people in the area. In the afternoon, they might be found on the outskirts of the park, near the soccer fields. When you find them, though, you might even get a picture with one of the deer, as they usually aren‘t very anxious around people. However always remember and respect, that they are wild animals and shouldn’t be pet or fed.

Have a coffee at Phoenix café

Take a break and enjoy a coffee and a slice of cake in the sun! Phoenix café, in the back of Phoenix park, not only offers a beautiful terrace to sit in the sun, but also a variety of freshly made cakes, sandwiches, salads and breakfast options. A perfect spot to relax and recharge on a sunny day in Phoenix Park.

Dublin Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in the capital and a perfect activity for good weather.

Visit Dublin Zoo

One of the main attractions in Dublin, the Dublin Zoo, is actually located right in the middle of Phoenix Park. Home to over 400 animals from around the world, the zoo offers a Safari Zone with African animals like zebras, giraffes and antelopes living in one area together, a discovery and learning center as well as a family farm. If you visit on a sunny day, you might be lucky and see a lot of the animals on the outside areas of their enclosures.

Have a picnic

What better thing to do on a sunny day in Phoenix Park than a picnic? Grab your partner, friends or family, some finger food and drinks and a blanket and enjoy the greenery, the sun and the calmness of the park compared to the city. Surrounded by daisies and dandelions on dreamy green hills, or the flowerbeds of the people‘s garden, you‘ll feel the vibes of summer in the city.

See the presidential house

You might have already seen it on your bike tour through the park, but now it‘s time to get a little closer to the residence of the President of Ireland. Used as his private residence, but also as official, representative building, the house can be visited in free guided tours almost every Saturday of the year. Guided tours of the houses‘ beautiful gardens are running from June to October and are a perfect activity for a sunny Saturday in Dublin.

Enjoy some sports

You want your day in Dublin to be a bit more active? Then you‘ll love playing football with your friends on the designated fields or just on a plain area of the park! If you are more into running, you can choose one of the routes in the park to go for a jog, or use the permanent orienteering course. Just select a route on the map which you can download on the Phoenix Park website, navigate through diverse terrain and visit the control points.

So as you can see, there is a lot to do in Phoenix Park and the best time to go is on a sunny day. Enjoy the good weather, the activities, the food and drinks and have an unforgettable day in the nature, while still being in Dublin city. And how to get there? As Phoenix Park is a bit outside of the city, the best way to get there is by bike or by bus. Our hop-on-hop-off buses from City Sightseeing bring you right into the park and on your way there, you can enjoy the other sights of the city and relax in the sunshine on the top deck of the bus.
