Dublin is a beautiful city with lots to do and lots to see. But sometimes, you want to experience Ireland with a bit less hustle and a bit more nature. Luckily, there are many great destinations near Dublin that you can visit, even when you’re just staying in Ireland for a few days. In this post, we’ll present you Dublin’s surrounding villages – perfect for day trips or cozy getaways from the city.

Howth – coastal walks and seaside charme

The coastal village Howth is just an hour by DART from Dublin centre, but it offers a totally different vibe than the city. The fishing village has a charming harbour, fantastic seafood restaurants and a coastal walk with stunning views. There are several routes to walk the Howth Cliff Path with different intensities, but all of them will have you marvelling over the views of the cliffs and the ocean. Howth is also a great place to look for unique artisan pieces and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some seals lounging close to the pier.

Dalkey – history, castles and coastal chic

Dalkey is a stylish village only half an hour from Dublin. Formerly part of County Dublin, now part of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Dalkey could be called Dublin’s Riviera. The small town has quaint streets lined with small shops, cafes and gallies, perfect for strolling along on a sunny day. Of course you can also go for a swim in the sea. And if you’re interested in history, you can learn more about medieval life in Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre. Dalkey and the area around it is also known to be home to several celebrities. Maybe, you’ll run into Bono, Enya and the likes.

Glencullen – mountains and traditional Irish flair

This gem of a village is nestled in the Dublin Mountains. Glencullen is the perfect retreat for outdoor adventurers and offers several great hiking opportunities. The village is also home to the famous Johnnie Fox’s Pub, one of the highest pubs in Ireland. Here, you can enjoy a pint, a hearty meal and live traditional Irish music.

Malahide – historical castle and seaside ambience

Malahide is only 14 km north of Dublin city. It has a beautiful village centre, an own harbour and of course its highlight, Malahide Castle. The estate with its own park has been home to the Talbot family until it was sold to the Irish State in 1975. That is why you can visit the castle today. You might also know one celebrity living here: Cecelia Ahern. The author of PS, I Love You and others grew up in Malahide and still lives there with her family.

    Skerries – coastal calm and colour

    In about 35 minutes by train from Dublin you’ll Skerries in county Fingal. The village is known for its colurful harbour, its windmills and a scenic shoreline. In the Skerries Mills Heritage Centre you can even learn about traditional milling. If you’d rather like to relax, two beautiful beaches and great seafood restaurants await you.
